I have grow to truly care about these kids and I am sad to know that our time together has come to an end. They have really opened my eyes to their world and I am able to understand more where they are coming from. I think this experience will be beneficial for me when I am starting to teach. It has taught me how to relate to the students and a little bit about how they think and process information. Overall, I had a wonderful semester at my service learning!Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-20190383037441614842010-12-07T10:10:00.000-08:002010-12-07T10:10:32.155-08:00LanguageWhen I was helping the students with their homework I was also listening in on their conversations. A lot of them were swearing and saying profane things and it really shocked me. These children are only in 7th grade. I remembered back to when I was in 7th grade and we never talked like this. It kind of makes me sad because I think that a lot of of morals and standards are falling in our society. More and more things are being called acceptable and kids are learning more things at younger ages. I think it's important to try to guard children from this and maintain some of their innocence.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-32158050327339712862010-12-07T10:07:00.000-08:002010-12-07T10:07:39.888-08:00FundraiserFor my service learning this week, we went out into the community. The students were fundraising for the next year and we went out and put flyers on every door in the surrounding community. I loved doing this with the kids because I got to see them outside of a structured setting. They became more of themselves and I was surprised to see how devoted and excited they were to do the fundraising. I love that the program is having them get involved in the community and is teaching them good morals and virtues. They are holding a bake sale as well and all of the kids are helping to bake goods. I thought this was an excellent way to teach them about fundraising and to get them out of a classroom setting and into the community.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-87384903019730293352010-11-04T10:07:00.000-07:002010-11-04T10:07:11.662-07:00MemoriesThis past week at my service learning, I had fun observing the children. They were finished with their homework and so they went outside for play time. It was amazing to see them jumping around in the leaves and just having a good time being together. Sometimes I wish that friendships could go back to how they were when we were children. They seem like there's not as many strings attached and that they are free to just be who they are and have fun playing with friends. Also I saw some of the girls talking about who they liked and I just remembered back to when I was that age. They are just like me when I was young and when I teach I should remember that I can relate to these children more than I think. Even though years separate us, I have been through some of the things they are going through. I need to meet them on their level and try to relate the teaching to their lives.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-44923219810028172782010-11-04T10:00:00.000-07:002010-11-04T10:00:21.744-07:00ChildrenThroughout my life I have had many opportunities to travel to other countries and go into schools. Here I got to interact with the children and talk with them. At my service learning, I also get to interact with the children and talk to them about their lives. I have come to realize that children all over the world are very similar. They all have the same needs and the same desire to be loved and cherished. Talking with the children in my service learning, I discovered that many of them are having troubles at home. I also encountered this with the children around the world that I talked to. No matter where you go, children are in need of nurturing and acceptance and love. And I really want to be an agent of this love and acceptance. I think I have such an amazing opportunity to speak into the lives of children and I hope that I can do this to the best of my ability whether it is here in the United States or in another country.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-18767771105750145982010-11-03T17:39:00.000-07:002010-11-03T17:39:44.284-07:00Service LearningFor my next service learning experience I was very surprised. We started by talking about what each of the kids thought about fate and destiny. These were all 7th and 8th grade students and I was shocked by their answers. Some of them were very adamant about not believing in fate and supported their views with experiences they had in their lives. Others explained why they believed in fate and destiny because it went along with their religion or their parent's beliefs. Overall I was shocked because at their young age, they were already forming opinions about very controversial, difficult topics. It shows how these children all have a voice, and their voices are valid and important and that if we take the time to listen, we can learn from them.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-27043253482825430992010-11-02T09:50:00.000-07:002010-11-02T09:50:35.990-07:00Blog 6For my prop regarding school culture I am bringing in a picture of my old lacrosse team as well as my lacrosse stick. I really feel like schools are just like sports teams. The teachers are coaches that guide and encourage the students or players on in their learning. They push them to be the best students (players) that they can be. Many times there are more than one coach and this is like the many teachers that make up a school. The coaches work together to help the teammates grow just like teachers should collaborate with each other and offer advice so that all students can grow and benefit. The athletic director is like the principal, in that he oversees the coaches and the overall playing(learning) going on. When the team wins the coaches win, just like how when students do well and succeed, teachers succeed because they know that what they are doing counts and has made a difference in the lives of the people around them. The lacrosse stick is one of the tools that coaches give their players to succeed and represents the tools that teachers give their students to do well. These tools are time, attention, positive encouragement, feedback, and the resources they need to learn.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-11352724470640186372010-11-02T07:17:00.000-07:002010-11-02T07:17:41.479-07:00Service learning 1st experienceI did not quite know what to expect when I first went to my service learning site a couple weeks ago. Walking in I thought that I would be sitting with one student helping them with homework for the entire time. But instead we first had snack and then I found myself sitting at a table with all African American seventh grade boys. This was a little out of my comfort zone because I want to teach young children. But I began talking to them and found them very funny and very respectful. They loved playing games with me and including me in their conversations. They did not have much homework to do so we played games the whole time. I loved being with these boys which really shocked me because I thought that I would dislike middle school tutoring and teaching. But now seeing how much fun and how much I loved hanging with them, I could see myself teaching middle school as well. Overall I loved my first experience and it was very different than what I thought it would be.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-58258074151783327122010-10-14T09:41:00.000-07:002010-10-14T09:41:44.802-07:00Weblog 4Here is a link to my timetoast with the updated entry.

I believe that using feedback to assist learning especially with assessments can greatly help students understand concepts better. Especially with assessments, it is important for a teacher to proved feedback on what the student got wrong or what they could have done better. And it is important that the teacher explains what the correct answer is instead of merely saying it is wrong. If students are not able to see correct answers then they will never understand what they did wrong and therefore they will not understand the material being covered. When giving feedback teachers give students a chance to question themselves and to dig deeper into the possibilities behind questions and class material.
Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-58593906318307433652010-09-30T08:38:00.000-07:002010-09-30T08:38:06.913-07:00Weblog 31. 3. In service learning then, is the ultimate goal to gain information or to make an impact on children?
This is where we go to an after school program and tudor children. We will be helping them with homework they have or participate in games or learning experiences with them. I am very excited for this because I participated in a program like this last year and absolutely loved it. We went to a church where there was an after school program right in the middle of Harrisburg, Pa. With these children we built relationships that existed outside of the time we were volunteering there. We really got the opportunity to make an impact in their lives. We did everything from tutoring the children to simply playing sports with them or talking to them. They were so excited that an older person was interested in their lives. I think that Open Doors will be just as succesfull and I really look forward to building relationships with the children and hopefully encouraging them and helping them in a positive way.Catiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08505611970285485392noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6230248825545323853.post-77900232497594638592010-09-22T13:06:00.001-07:002010-09-22T13:06:20.902-07:00
Weblog 1: Class Survey

I would love to teach grades 1-4.

I love to sing and have a passion for music. I also love to travel and have done so extensively, including living in Germany and South Africa. Love to play sports.

I most definitely need to feel comfortable with the teacher and with my classmates. I need to feel like I am not being judged for my answers or will not be reprimanded for mistakes, but will be encouraged to discover new knowledge. I also love a class full of lectures and discussions.

As a student, I believe I excel when I feel comfortable with my surroundings. I am not the first person to speak up in class, but when I feel like I am in a safe environment, I do give my opinions and enjoy open debate with the class. I usually procrastinate doing work, but always get it done on time and to a good extent. I am an excellent test taker and a good writer, although I do not much enjoy writing. When I do not understand something, I usually ask for help from family members or peers and then the teacher if I still cannot understand.

I learn best when it is in organized, structured classrooms.

I had a high school teacher that has made a lasting impression on me. He was extremely wise in the way he presented himself and in his teaching methods. He was young for a teacher but all of his students grew to greatly respect him because of his caring heart and giving nature. He was always available to talk to students outside of class and really showed a true interest in our lives. He gave great advice and you could tell he was extremely passionate about teaching. He really inspired me to be the best teacher I can be so that I can impact children the way he impacted me.

I think a huge issue facing education right now is apathy and the rate at which teachers burn out. I think we are seeing a lot of teachers who have lost their passion for teaching and who are not truly investing their hearts and time into each set of students they have. I think this really affects the quality of education our students receive and the amount of nourishment and encouragement they get from teachers to learn.

I think we need to interact with children. We need to be involved in their everyday lives, learning how they interact, how their brains work, how they learn best. Then we need to learn how to approach them and how to gain their respect and trust. This would involve a lot of visiting schools or service learning projects. We also need to construct lesson plans that we can all critique and improve upon that we feel will really benefit children. I think we need to study education’s role in the way society is shaped and the way we are all raised and realize we have a huge part in that. I also feel like we need to study different teaching methods and draw from all of them. I think we all need to be a team that helps one another excel and learn the tools necessary to instruct children. We all need to have debates and discussions and brainstorm together. I think we need to avoid studying wrong methods of teaching and avoid just sitting in a classroom just talking about the material. We should get out there and actually experience what we are talking about.
